Samuel was listed in the 1853 Cincinnati directory as working as a grocer, and he and his family lived at the northwest corner of Gano Street and Lodge Street (later became 68 Gano Street). Over the following few years, each of his daughters got married. He retired in 1858 and moved to Ripley County, Indiana the following year, which was only about 50 miles west of Cincinnati.
