He then started to earn his own living. He worked as a coachman for a well-to-do family. He received cultural training among aristocrats and was treated with courtesy. He resisted the temptations which were also there. Later when the gospel came into his life, he was glad that he had no bad habits to overcome. He was baptized 16 February 1859 and in November was called to fill a mission in Sweden . In 1861 , he and his brother and sister emigrated to the Valley, arriving in Septemer 1861 . His first work was hauling logs for Joseph Horne . It was there he met his future wife. After they were married, they lived in Salt Lake for a time until they were called by Brigham Young to help settle Deseret . After two more children were born, Elias met a young lady who agreed to live in his home and help his wife who was ill. The year was 1868 . In the spring, he married her. They all made their home in Meadow, Utah . He served in many positions in the church and on 25 November 1901 , he was ordained a patriarch. In 1888 he served four months in the penitentiary for his religious convictions (polygamy). He homesteaded and farmed some land east of town, known as the Beckstrand Farm.
