Lydia was the daughter of John Shafer and Mary Pence. She had an older brother,George and sister, Mary "Polly." When Lydia was 2 months old her mother died. Her father married again and he had several children with his 2nd wife. Lydia married Peter Ackerly on Nov. 6, 1829 in Rockbridge Co. They would have 14 children: Elizabeth (1829), John S. (1830), George W.(1832), Mary Margaret (1833), Sarah Ann (1834), William A.(1836), James P.(1837), Elvira Jane(1840), Lucinda Agnes(1841), Mariah W. (1843), twins- David Gardiner and Shanklin M.(1846), Edmonia T.(1849) and Andrew Jackson (1852). She sent six sons to fight for the Confederacy during the Civil War. She lost two and two sons-in-law during the War. She and Peter were married for 52 years. Lydia died eleven days before Peter on June 7th, 1880. They spent their whole married life living along Plank Road in Rockbridge County, VA.
