Death of Daniel Bradham (grandfather of Frank)

16 Mar 1859 , Onslow County, North Carolina

Weekly Standard, Raleigh, North Carolina

March 16, 1859

Parricide - A reliable correspondent, writing us from Onslow county, under date of the the 28th ult., says that on Thursday, the 24th Feb., 1859, Stephen P. Bradham of that county, killed his father, Daniel Bradham, by striking him over the head with a fence rail. On Saturday, the 26th, an inquest was held over the body by Coroner Elijah Murrill. The verdict of the jury was in accordance with the facts above stated.

The Bradhams, father and son, were both citizens and residents of Onslow county, and lived close together, but had been enemies for years, during which time they seldom met without a quarrel taking place. It was during one of these quarrels that the son, S. P. Bradham, seized a fence rail and killed the old man with one blow over the head. The affair occured in Richland's District.

The murderer has not yet been arrested or found, notwithstanding the vigilent exertions of Sherriff Humphrey, and it is feared that he may be able to elude the officers of the law and make his escape. - Wilmington Journal

Jacob changed his name from Stephen Bradham to Jacob Brock.
Jacob was buried on his property with a huge marker. A relative exhumed his body and reburied him in the cemetery in the 1980's.
