Joseph Emory "Shag" Austin, 68, of Boones Mill passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013, at his home. He was born September 19, 1944, the son of the late Raymond and Blanche Rutrough Austin. Joseph retired from VDOT and dairy farming and enjoyed auto racing. Surviving are his children, Shanon Bailey and boyfriend, Bill Osbourne, Aaron Austin, Robert Austin and wife, Melissa; stepson, Howard Wyrick Jr.; grandchildren, Bonnie Osbourne, Patrick, Dylan, and Avery Austin; special friends, Phillip Austin, Brenda Carter and J.D. Edwards; caretakers and special cousins, Lena and Frances Sink; numerous cousins and friends; uncle, Wilmer C. Austin.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Mountain View Old German Baptist Brethren Church with Elder Abram Rutrough and Elder Dan Long officiating. Interment will follow in Rutrough Family Cemetery. His family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Old German Baptist Brethren Church.
The family request flowers be omitted and memorials be made to the American Cancer Society , 1079 C Spruce Street, Martinsville, VA 24112. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount/ Smith Mountain Lake.
