George Schuler, eighty-nine years old, a resident of Iowa since about 1855 and a veteran of the union army in the Civil War, died at his home west of Dumont at 5:15 Wednesday evening, April 5, 1933

Mr. Schuler is survived by eight sons, two daughters, forty grandchildren and forty-seven great grandchildren.

Two daughters and four sons preceded him in death.

He was born on May 8, 1943 in Pennsylvania and left that state for Illinois when seven years old. A few years later, he became a resident of Black Hawk County (Iowa), and from there came to a farm near Dumont about fifty years ago. Sixteen years ago he moved to town.

Mr. Schuler enlisted in the Thirty-second Iowa Infantry at Waterloo in 1861, when eighteen years old, and served throughout the (Civil War) conflict, participating in twenty-seven battles, the march to the sea, and the review at Washington.

He married Ella Amanda Buehner in 1866, near Dunkerton. She died in 1899.

That same year, he married Mrs. Sarah Frazier at Charles City. She died in 1924.

Mr. Schuler was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic at Hampton.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Evangelical church with the pastor, Rev. H. M. Raecker, in charge, assisted by Rev. L. F. Smith, pastor of the Evangelical church of Aredale and Rev. J. S. Sherfy, pastor of the Church of the Brethren.

A quartet composed of Mrs. Roscoe Armstrong, Mrs. Guy Jackson, Lloyd Faber and Vern Ahrens, sang “The City Four Square,” “Lights of Home,” and “Going Down the Valley,” assisted by Mrs. Raymond Pfaltzgraff at the piano.

Mrs. C. F. Roder and Miss Fern Stafford were in charge of floral offerings. Five Civil War veterans attended in a body, E. J. Stonebraker, W. M. Savidge, Mr. Connor of Hampton, Frank Beach, Sr. and Jerry Van Riper. The G. A. R. rites were held at the church with Commander Stonebraker in charge. Odd Fellows and American Legion attended in a body.

The pallbearers were six grandsons: Alfred, George, Osler, Dale, Virgil, and George Schuler.

Services were at the Harlan Cemetery, where interment was made. The Odd Fellow Lodge, of which Mr. Schuler was a charter member, and the firing squad of the American Legion were in charge.
