To know her was to love her. Our beautiful Vera Mae Barton peacefully passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013, in Wood Village. She was 95.
A funeral took place Saturday at Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home in Kaufman, Texas.
Vera was born to Albert and Stella Hassel on Oct. 31, 1917, in Rusk, Texas, along with her twin, and joined what was to be nine other brothers and sisters. She was the last surviving sibling.
Vera graduated from Maydelle High School in 1936, then obtained her teacher's degree from Jacksonville College in May of 1938. She followed with her bachelor's degree in August of 1949 and her master's degree in August of 1957, both from East Texas State College in Commerce, Texas, where she became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
She was a lifetime member of the Baptist Church. She married Dalton "Gene" Barton on Dec. 30, 1941, and had two children, Sandra and Carlton. She taught school in Texas, primarily in Kaufman, for 20 years. In 1962, she moved to Oregon with her son and taught school in the Corvallis School District for another 19 years.
Upon her retirement, she made several trips to England to visit friends, became a Master Gardener through the Oregon State University Extension Service and continued her activities in Delta Kappa Gamma until she moved to Gresham in 2001.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Wright; grandson Daniel Countryman; and great-granddaughter, Dani Countryman, all of Kaufman.
She is survived by her son, Carlton (wife Peggy) of Gresham; and three grandchildren, Blaine of Gresham, Todd (wife Siobhan) of Happy Valley and Desa Lynn of Bend. In Texas, she is survived by grandsons Gene Countryman and Michael Julian (wife Misty), both of Kaufman. She also is survived by numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
