David Roscoe Baldwin, 79, R.F.D. 2, Bellefontaine, who termed himself "Poet of the Hills," died at 9 p.m. Monday in Mary Rutan hospital where he was admitted early Sunday following a cerebral hemorrhage suffered at his home north of this city along the Rushsylvania Pike. He had long engaged in the nursery and landscaping profession from his "Rocklands" home and was widely known. He composed more than 300 pieces of perfect rhyme, had written and published 17 booklets on various subjects, and was a frequent writer on religion and morals. He was a member of the First Friends church and a frequent speaker and recitationist at Quaker meetings. He was a World War I veteran. Born July 13, 1889 in Morrow county, a son of William Henry and Mary Katherine Reeve Baldwin, he had traced his ancestry 902 years back to a soldier in the army of William-The-Conqueror at the battle of Hastings in 1066, who settled in England. Mr. Baldwin was married July 13, 1918 at Harrod to the former Lena Belle Dittus and for a time they resided in Hardin County. They had observed their Golden Wedding anniversary last Sunday. Surviving with Mrs. Baldwin are four daughters, Mrs. Neil (Elaine) Jones, Alger; Mrs. Robert (Lorna) Vermilyea, Christiansburg, Va.; Mrs. Edwin (Zylpha) Hoover, Lafayette, Ind., and Mrs. James (Barbara) Kloboucnik, Marion, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and six sisters, Mrs. Elsie Waite, McGuffey; Mrs. Harold (Zelma) Shadley, Ada; Mrs. C.E. (Wilma) Wintringham, Middletown; Mrs. Alvaretta Sillin, Buckland; Mrs. Ralph (Vivian) Marling, Ada, and Mrs. Adene (Gazelle) Beck, Highland, Ind. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Friends church in charge of the pastor, Rev. Bruce Burch. Burial will follow in Zanesfield cemetery.
