Lynn, who was not given a middle name, was the youngest child of Laura Alice (Fitch) and Arthur James Polhemus. His maternal grandparents were Genevieve Lillian (Sherman) and Florus DeWitt Fitch, and his paternal grand parents were Alice Louise (Humphreys) and John Martin Polhemus. Lynn was raised on the farm homesteaded by his paternal grandparents. He began working the farm as a child and continued until his health forced him to retire.
