Robert L. "Red" Smith, 83, of Beverly, husband of the late Barbara L. (Lee) Smith, died unexpectedly March 20, 2004, at Beverly Hospital.

Born in Danvers, he was the son of the late Marquis Seymour and Edith (Coombs) Smith.

Mr. Smith was raised and educated in both Danvers and Marblehead. In 1941, he graduated from Kimball Union Academy in Maine and shortly thereafter joined the United States Navy. His Navy service began with a trawler voyage from Maine to the Philippines where he became a plank owner or member of the original crew, which commissioned the USS Ommaney Bay. While serving, his ship was sunk in a battle off the Philippines and he spent four days in the water until being rescued. However, the ship which rescued him and aboard which he continued his service was also later sunk. He was then reassigned to Chicago, Ill., where he married Barbara Lee.

Following his discharge as a quartermaster second class in 1945, Mr. Smith became employed in his family's business, Salem Oil and Grease. He began his career sweeping floors for his father and had worked through various other positions becoming treasurer for many years until his retirement.

Active in Salem community, he served on the Board of Directors for many organizations including the Salem Chamber of Commerce, the Salem YMCA, the Salvation Army and the Salem Boy's and Girl's Club. He was also a member of the Salem Lions Club and had served on the Board of Directors of the former Roger Conant Bank in Salem.

A lifelong boating enthusiast, Mr. Smith grew up racing sailboats and was a member of the original fleet of Town Class sailboats in Marblehead. He also raced in the Brutal Beast class and he and his late wife raced in the Day Sailor Class. The most senior of continuous members with almost 70 years of membership in the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead, Mr. Smith remained active in sailboat racing, serving as a member and former chairman of the race committee. Mr. Smith shared his passion for the race committee with his daughters and granddaughter and also encouraged them to become active members of the race committee. In the winter, he also would serve as a member of the race committee for Key West Race Week. He also had power-boats with which he and his family spent many summers enjoying local day trips, as well as cruises from Maine to Connecticut.

Mr. Smith is survived by three children, David Smith and his wife, Nancy Kirkiles of Essex, Conn., Bonne Smith of Westbrook, Maine and Ginger Smith of Haverhill and her longtime companion, Charles Doyle of Andover; a granddaughter, Victoria Smith of Westbrook, Maine; a sister, Patricia Magee of Woldoboro, Maine; his Boston Terrier, "Siggy"; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late Marquis S. Smith II; and brother of the late Constance Brooking.

His funeral was held March 24 from the Murphy Funeral Home of Salem. Interment was private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, Essex County Branch, 100 Cummings Center, Suite 323A, Beverly, MA 01985.
