Retired Marine Lt. Col. John Paul Reilly, 74, of Stafford County passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013.
Born June 20, 1938, in Gallitzin, Pa., to James W. and Catherine J. Reilly, he graduated from California State Teachers College of California, Pa., in 1960 with a degree in industrial arts education. During his soph omore year at CSTC, he joined the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course pro gram. Following two sum mers of training at Marine Corps Base Quantico and upon graduation from col lege, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marines and was again or dered to Quantico for further training at the Basic School.
During his 20 years of active duty service, Lt. Col. Reilly served in various command and staff billets, including two tours of duty in Vietnam; commanding officer of Marine barracks, Keflavik, Iceland; operations officer of the 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan; and director of the Marine Corps Communication Officer School at Quantico. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
Upon retirement in 1980, Lt. Col. Reilly was offered a position by Stafford County Schools as a technology education teacher and spent 14 years teaching construction technology and technical drawing at the high school level. He retired from teaching in 1994.
John is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Carol E. Taylor of Goodland, Kan.; and four children, Stacey Colebaugh, her husband, Brian, and four daughters, all of Stafford, Tracey Brown, her husband, Thomas, and two children, all of Apopka, Fla., Erin Smith, her husband, Russell, and two daughters, all of Stafford, and James, his wife, Kazumi, and two children, all of Atlanta. John was preceded in death by the couples infant son, Kristjan.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Lt. Col. Reilly at noon Wednesday, June 19, at St. William of York Catholic Church, Staf ford. Father Robert J. De Martino will be the celebrant. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery. A reception will follow the inte ment at St. William of York Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m Tuesday, June 18, at Covenant Funeral Service, Staf ford, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m.
