Husband of:
Alice F. Wartella, married August 5, 1937 in Emmet County, Michigan. Daughter of William Wartella and Emma Wartella. Source: Michigan, Marriage Records, 1867-1952.

Charles E. LaHaie, 85, a lifelong resident of Cheboygan, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2001. He had been a patient at Hospice House of the Straits for the past nine weeks where he received the highest level of professional and compassionate care from the entire Hospice staff and its many volunteers. He was born April 9, 1915, the son of his loving parents Henry and Alexina LaHaie. He had five brothers, Raymond, John, Rolland, Joseph and Albert; and one sister, Gabrielle. He lived and worked in Cheboygan all of his life, with the exception of three years when he worked for General Motors Corporation in the early 1940s. He was a graduate of County Normal and taught school in Cheboygan County. He worked with his uncle, Joseph Viau, at Viau's Clothing Store before entering the real estate profession. He was active in real estate brokerage and appraisal in Michigan and other states, assisting in right-of-way and property acquisition for the state of Michigan and the federal government, including Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and the Apostle Islands National Park. His primary interest was real estate development with several projects in the city of Cheboygan, Cheboygan County, Bois Blanc Island and the Upper Peninsula. He served his community as a member of the Cheboygan Area School Board of Education and was mayor of the city of Cheboygan. He was a participant in local, state and national politics and a proud and lifelong member of the Democratic Party. He was an active member of the congregation of St. Mary Catholic Church. He dearly loved Cheboygan, the place and its people, and was involved in many sports and cultural activities. He was an avid hunter and an environmentalist. He enjoyed playing on Lake's Softball team and received a trophy for a batting average of .500 in one season with many of his hits being bunts. He loved speed skating. His favorite indoor sport was playing pinochle and cribbage, which he played with fierce and fair competition with his family members and friends. He was the devoted husband of Alice (Wartella) LaHaie for 63 years and father of William LaHaie, Eleanor (James) LeClair, Thomas LaHaie, Marcia (Gregory) Bourrie, Pamela Crawford, Jayne (Donald) Beem, and Charles LaHaie, all of whom survive him, along with 17 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Cremation has already taken place. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 19 at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Dennis Stillwell presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Hospice House of the Straits.
