George Washington Gladding was the 9th of 13 children born to Timothy Gladding and his wife Anne Jacobs Gladding. He was the founder of the noted dry goods store of Providence. Founded by Matthew Watson and George W. Gladding in 1805 it was located at 35 Cheapside. (The southern end of N. Main Street. It eventually became known as B.H. Gladding & Co and was run by George's sons, George F. and Benjamin Hill Gladding.
George married first Ann Jacobs, who only lived a year after they were married and 2nd Rebecca Munro Hill. They were the parents of 12 children:
