A son of William and Mariam (Smith) Jennings, the Hon. Dudley Smith Jennings, Sr. was an eminent lawyer of his day. Highly educated and a commanding public speaker, he was also a respected judge. Born in Virginia, he was a Mason and, by 1832 was elected Grand Master of Tennessee. He later moved to Jackson, Mississippi where served as Grand Master in that state as well.

In 1851, he brought his family to Texas. Several of his sons formed the publishing firm 'Jennings Brothers,' and served their communities in various capacities.

His brother was Thomas Jefferson Jennings (1801-1881), who served in the Texas legislator and was Attorney General of Texas from 1852-1856.
