Born in London, England in about 1820, daughter of Thomas Hayes. Arrived in America with her parents at age 12 and the family settled in New York. There she married Charles L. Van Sands of New Jersey. They moved to Branford, Ct. about 1867 and remained there the rest of their lives.They had seven children: Charles Lyman, Lucy Emma, Caroline Amanda, Charles Edward, Mary Almeda, Horace Irving, & Lucius Oscar.
Caroline lived to be 97 yrs., 11 mos. in relatively good health her whole life.
