Husband of 1) Martha Jane ALBERT (1832-1862), and 2) Rachel Frances Catherine SARVER (11849-1927)

Henry Shelton TROUTT (1832-1885) was born 1832 at Sinking Creek Valley, Giles (now Craig) County, VA, the oldest son of George C. TROUTT (1803-1849) and Rosanna Elizabeth CALDWELL (1803-1891).

Henry (age 21) married first to Martha Jane ALBERT (1832-1862) on 27 Jan 1853 in Craig County, VA. At least five children were born to this union, all born on the family farm at Sinking Creek Valley, in Craig County. While there is conflicting information, it appears that hist 1st wife, Martha, may have died on 24 April 1862, while other sources suggest 1869.

On 28 Aug 1862 (at age 30), Henry Shelton Troutt journeyed to Red Sulphur Springs, Monroe, VA (now WV) enlisting for a period of 3 years service as a Private in Company "C," 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment, previously known as the "1st Kanawha Regiment." Interestingly, Henry, or "H.S." as he is often listed on his muster cards, was enlisted by Lt. Col. George S. Patton (1833-1864), VMI graduate and the grandfather of Gen. George S. Patton, III of WW-II fame. On 15 Aug 1863, Henry was elected 3rd Lt, Co. "C," with this rank being confirmed by official appointment on 5 Sep 1863. Henry received a final promotion to 2nd Lt, on 5 Jun 1864.

On 30 Jul 1864, Henry was admitted to the General Hospital, Winchester, VA, and then soon transferred to Howard's Grove Hospital, Richmond, VA on 4 Aug 1864. This is Henry's last entry in his Compiled Service Records (CSR), and it is not yet known whether he was medically discharged, or returned to full duty. Regardless, the Civil War in Virginia ended nine months later with the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox on 9 May 1865.

Henry (age 46) married second on 2 May 1878 to Rachel Frances SARVER (age 29), Craig County, VA. At least (3) children were born to this second union.

Henry died at age 53 of consumption on 16 April 1885 and was buried in Ross Cemetery, sinking Creek Valley, Craig County, Virginia.

His second wife, Rachel Frances SARVER TROUTT died at age 78 on 9 Jun 1927 in Wayne Twp, Huntington, IN, and is buried in Jefferson Cemetery, Upland, Grant, IN

NOTE: Unfortunately, the 12 Sep 1938 request by the United Daughters of the Confederacy for Henry's head stone was based (in error) on 2nd Lt. Henry S. TROUT who was actually his 3rd cousin, Henry Sharver TROUT (1841-1918) of Roanoke who had served with the 28th VA Infantry -- same rank, entirely different regiment, but same Pickett's Division. This is why his stone is incorrectly spelled with "TROUT" (single-T), and marked incorrectly with the 28th Virginia, rather than the 22nd Virginia.
