FORT YATES -- Robert C. Walker, 56, Fort Yates, died Aug. 7, 2004, at a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates, with the Rev. William A. Rushford officiating. Burial will be in the Crazy Walking Cemetery, rural Fort Yates.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and from 5-9 p.m. at the church, where a rosary service will begin at 7 p.m.

Robert was born July 15, 1948, at Fort Yates, to Charles and Luella (Frank ) Walker. He was raised and educated in Fort Yates and graduated from high school in 1966. He married Vanessa American Horse and out of this union Frank was born. For the last eight years, his love and companion, Ann Hall, were together and were married Oct. 18, 2003, at Prairie Knights Casino.

Robert worked as a campus security officer, United Tribes Technical College, land surveyor for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Standing Rock Agency. He was an accomplished musician who began playing the guitar, drumming and singing as a teenager. His beautiful voice would be with him his entire life. His band "The Country Sons" played throughout the Dakotas and Bob was known as the "Big Bopper". Bob especially loved playing for his family and friends at weddings, graduations, funerals or at a moment's notice. Bob's last dance was in May 2004, when he was asked to sing for Erica's graduation dance in LaPlant, S.D. His last song was "Don't Worry About Me" after his wife Annie asked him to sing her a song. This was on July 29 at the Fort Yates hospital as he was being prepared to be transported to a Bismarck hospital.

He is survived by his wife Annie; his son, Frank Walker; two sisters, Cheryl and Jesse "Jay" Taken Alive, McLaughlin, S.D., and Wanda and Robert Harris Sr., San Antonio, Texas; three brothers, Ralph and Alice Walker, McLaughlin, and Arnold and Mary Beth Walker, and Martin and Mary Walker all of Fort Yates; four stepchildren, Brooke, Rikki Lynn, Erica and Neil; three step-grandchildren; eleven nieces; six nephews; seven great-nephews; and four great nieces.

Robert was preceded in death by parents.
