Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 10:00 AM, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates with Brother George Maufort as celebrant.
Traditional Dakota/Lakota burial services will follow at the Crazy Walking family cemetery in rural Fort Yates.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates with a Parish Rosary at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
Wanda (Wanbli Okasan Win) was born October 23, 1961, to Charles and Luella (Frank) Walker at Fort Yates. She grew up in rural Fort Yates and attended school in Fort Yates with the Class of 1979.
Wanda enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1980 and later transition to active duty in the U.S. Army, where she served as a medic and a cook. On September 18, 1981, Wanda married Robert Harris in Killeen, TX. In 1982, Wanda was honorably discharged from military service. She and Robert raised their three children in various locales, including Texas, Germany, Mississippi, Alabama, North Carolina, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and finally made their home in San Antonio.
She was a dedicated mother and upon raising their three children, Wanda earned degrees in Economics and Business Administration from San Antonio College.
She maintained a myriad of hobbies and interests, including traveling, antiques, gambling, cooking, gardening, playing video games, listening to powwow music, and spending time with her family.
She loved her Dakota/Lakota culture and devoted countless hours to researching her family's rich history. She also made frequent trips to North Dakota to visit her family and the family ranch where she grew up.
Wanda's siblings will miss the daily phone calls that she made to them. As a little sister, she always expressed her love and concern.
Wanda was very supportive and proud of her family. She was especially proud of her children's and husband's educational achievements. Her sons are currently serving in the U.S. Army, and she was very grateful that her son, Kevin, returned safely home from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Wanda is survived by her husband, Robert; her daughter Raquel Harris; and her sons Robert Jr. and Kevin; one granddaughter, Amaya Harris, all of San Antonio; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Alice Walker, McLaughlin, SD, Arnold and Mary Beth Walker, Fort Yates, and Martin and Mary Walker, Fort Yates; her sister and brother-in-law Cheryl and Jesse "Jay" Taken Alive, McLaughlin, SD; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Lorenzo and Paula Harris, Columbus, MS, Thelma and Curtis Darby, Chicago, IL, Ella Williams, Columbus, MS; her three aunts, Ann Vermillion, McLaughlin, SD, Cecelia Roubideaux, Washington, DC, and Virginia McClain, Milwaukee, WI; her uncle, Martin Frank, Timber Lake, SD; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Adeline Ironroad, Fort Yates ND.
Welcoming Wanda to the Spirit World are her parents; her brother, Robert Walker; her maternal grandparents, Martin and Emma (Makes Trouble) Frank; her paternal grandparents, Paul and Emma (Greybear) Walker; a nephew, Derek Walker; and many relatives whom she researched extensively.
