J. H. Staedtler Passes Away Following Long Illness
J. Henry Staedtler, an age respected citizen of Monticello answered the final summons at his home on South Main street shortly after 10 o'clock Saturday evening. Mr. Staedtler's death was principally due to old age infirmities and he had been in failing health for a number of years, although, until only a short time before the end he had been able to up and about a great deal of the time.
John Henry Staedtler was born in Bavaria, Germany, on July (missing text) 1840. At the
age of 7 years he immigrated to America with his parents, the family coming direct to
Wisconsin and locating in Milwaukee. His marriage to Miss Margaret Wettengel occurred in that city on Sept. 14, 1863. This union was blessed with ten children, (missing text) of whom preceded their parents in death. Mr. Staedtler had been a resident of Monticello and vicinity since 1893, at which time he purchased and took charge of the farm in Mt. Pleasant township now owned by Henry E. Babler. Here the family made their home for a number years. Being a millwright by trade, Mr. Staedtler naturally had a liking for the milling business and eventually acquired the Monticello roller mills—at that time a modernly equipped milling plant. He continued in this business for a long term of years, subsequently disposing of the property and retiring from active business of impaired health and advancing years.
Mrs. Staedtler, with whom he had lived in happy wedlock for forty-nine years, preceded him to the other shore on April 26, 1912.
Mr. Staedtler was a man who enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his friends and
neighbors to the fullest extent. He was upright and honorable in all his business dealings, a worthy and public-spirited citizen and a likable neighbor. In the sorrow that has befallen them the bereaved relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
The deceased is survived by (missing) children, as follows: Mrs. (missing) Hancock,
Albany; Henry Staedtler, Madison; Mrs. Nellie Abley, Monticello; Mrs. Albert Glaettli,
Milwaukee; Mrs. Sylvia Knobel, Monticello; Mrs. J. G. L. Stauffacher, Steele, N. D.; and
Arthur and Robert Staedtler, of Montana.
Funeral services were held yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Reformed church, the Rev. A. Muehlmeier officiating. The services were largely attended by relatives and friends of the bereaved family. Interment was in the family lot in Highland cemetery.
