Mr. Reed was born Oct. 8, 1924 in Jasper County, Illinois, a son of James Arthur and Rosa Spelbring Reed. He married Joyce Allison on March 14, 1959, in Paris, Illinois. She died June 22, 1998.
Survivors include three daughters, Wendy Swider, Penny Hanson and Melanie Clark, all of Fairmount and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Mr. Reed was a millwright at General Motors' Tilton foundry for more than 40 years. He was Fairmount village clerk for 16 years and was also Fairmount fire chief for a time. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a chairman of the United Auto Workers bargaining committee and was president of UAW Retirees Group. He coached girls' softball and enjoyed woodworking.
