Melbourne Vincent Fadness passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2013, surrounded by his children and their spouses.

Mel was born in Wolf Point, Mont., on March 21, 1932, the ninth of 10 children to Emil and Gessina (Williamson) Fadness. He spent most of his childhood in the Bitterroot and graduated from Darby High School.

He was drafted into the Army in 1952 and served in Germany. He married Colleen McCarthy in 1957 and raised their five children while working in the Ironworkers Union and then at the Smelter.

When the Smelter closed he began working at Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs.

He loved fishing and camping and later in life became an avid reader and sports fan. He loved to watch baseball, football and his beloved Grizzlies.

Mel loved J.A. Jance mysteries, Montana and Indian history.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, his wife, Colleen, and son, Dale.

He is survived by children, Scott (Debbie), Lee (Debbie), Lynn (Steve) Reid, Tod (Dannette); and his brothers, Stan (Jan) and Vern (Sandy). He was blessed with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

At Mel's request funeral services will not be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Mel's name to the Hearst Free Library or Pintler Pets.
