Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Calnehoose, New York, he entered the Union Army at Springs, Pennsylvania and served as a Private in Company H, 83d Pennsylvania Infantry. His Medal of Honor action occurred May 5, 1864 at Wilderness, Virginia. His citation (issued November 19, 1897) reads: "Although assigned to other duty, he voluntarily joined his regiment in a charge and fought with it until severely wounded." Judge Swap, as he would later become known due to his service as a police judge in Pennsylvania, also worked in railroading. He relocated to Lakeport, California after the death of his wife, approximately 8 months before he passed away.
