Hazel was the third child born to Louis Miller and Martha Leppert Miller. She grew up on the family's farm in Stevinson, CA, attended local schools, graduating from Hilmar High School.
Hazel married Vern Pierce in 1929. Their first child, Rodney, was born in 1939. Rodney was killed in a car crash in 1962. Three children survived at the time of Hazel's death; Carolyn, Sam, and Colleen.
Vern and Hazel struggled during the first years of their marriage as it was the height of the Great Depression. They eventually acquired a farm and successfully grew grapes and other crops, and reared their children.
Over the years, Hazel and Vern hosted many Father's Day gatherings of the Miller relatives. Following Vern's death in 1999, she remained on the ranch, and continued to visit her family and her friends.
