KATHRYN CLARK BASSETT

Jupiter Island, Fla. – Kathryn Clark Bassett, 83, of Jupiter Island, Fla. died Friday, June 7, 2013.

She was born to the late William McKinley Bassett and Gladys Clark Bassett in Bassett, Virginia on August 25, 1929.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Charles Hunter Leisy.

She formerly resided in Martinsville, Va., and Incline Village, Nev. Kathryn graduated from Saint Mary's School in Raleigh, N.C., and Finch College in New York, N.Y.

During her lifetime, Kathryn served eight years on the board of Sierra Nevada College, during which time she sponsored an annual student academic scholarship. She also served on the board of her Homeowner's Association in Incline Village, Nev. Kathryn served as president of The Martinsville Garden Club, treasurer of the Jupiter Island Historical Society, and treasurer of the Jupiter Island Residents Association for many years. She was a member of the Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County, Jupiter Island Garden Club, First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, Chatmoss Country Club, Jupiter Island Club, and Incline Village Residents Association.

Kathryn and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Morten, donated the Wicks Pipe Organ currently used at their family's home church, Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church. This was given in memory of their parents, William M. and Gladys C. Bassett.

Kathryn's many interests in life included traveling, playing bridge, reading books, working crossword puzzles, cooking and taking cooking classes in various cuisines. She gave many hours of her time in volunteer work at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville, Hobe Sound Elementary School, and the Jupiter Island Club Library. She also enjoyed needlepoint, golf, tennis, deep sea fishing, flying, and watching her 49ers and Redskins.

Kathryn is survived by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Morten and her husband, Spencer W. Morten, Jr. of Bassett, Va.; a daughter Kathryn Leisy Childers of Dallas, Texas; two sons, William Davis Leisy and wife, Lynn of Amelia Island, Fla.; Robert Edward Leisy, Jr and wife, Ruth of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren Meghann Linn Leisy, Robert Edward Leisy III and wife Emily, David Allen Thompson, Jr, Heather Bassett Leisy, Kori Thompson Minton and husband Adam, William Davis Leisy, Jr, Kristin Elizabeth Thompson, Catherine Clarke Leisy; great-grandchildren Cailin Skye Hancock, and Cooper James Minton.

She is also survived by her loyal extended family Arturo and Lupe Rodriguez, and their children Rocio, Arturo Jr, and Jazmine.

The family will host a visitation between 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013, at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett, Va. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jim Hewitt officiating. Entombment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting any donations be made to the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church.
