It was said it was he who first raised the Stars and Bars above the Statehouse in Nashville.
"at 16 years of age, he enlisted as a Lieutenant in the 10TH Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, CSA. As a member of which regiment he was engaged in the actions of Forts Heiman and Donelson, and escaped from the latter at it's surrender. Continued in different branches of the service until the end of the war. Was on the staff of Brig. Gen. Bell, of Forrest's command; participated in several engagements under Forrest; was wounded in the neck at the battle of Old Town Creek, Mississippi. in 1864. His conduct throughout the war showed that he possessed the highest degree of patriotism and gallantry."
