First Sergeant James A. Hamilton

Company M, 105th Infantry, Hoosick Falls, New York.

Rallied his company after it had become disorganized and all the officers were killed or wounded.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Sergeant James A. Hamilton (ASN: 1225269), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, A.E.F., near Ronssoy, France, 27 September 1918. First Sergeant Hamilton rallied his company after it had become disorganized under a machine-gun barrage and all the officers were killed or wounded. He led his men forward in an effective attack, and was shortly afterwards killed while moving along his line.
