He married Florence Porter on May 23, 1947 and she survives. Also surviving are sons: Willard and Bennet , both of Dublin, Ohio, daughter: Martha Sears of Bowling Green. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded by a brother; W. Earl Givins.
Dr. Givins was professor in the History Department at Bowling Green State University. He graduated from a Washington D.C. High School, George Washington University and Stanford University. During World War 2 he served in the 17th and 82 Airborne Divisions in the Glider Infantry. At BGSU he taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. He played major roles in the development of the Canadian Studied Program ( and teaching Canadian history) and in the establishment of Phi Beta Kappa at the university. Some of his memberships and activities include: First Presbyterian Church (Elder, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher) Kiwanis Club, Ohio Historical Society, The Ohio Academy of History as a member of it's Executive Committee, editor of it's newsletter, and President 1993-1994. He was a Wheeled Meals Driver. He was named an honorary Alumnus in 1983.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2004 at 2:00pm in the church. Rev. David Young, officiating. A reception will follow the service. Private
Interment is in Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Stuart & Florence Givens History Scholarship Fund or the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund Bowling Green. Condolences may be sent at www.dunnfuneralhome.com
