Oregonian, The (Portland, OR) - Sunday, September 2, 2012

Ruth A. Craford, 85, the daughter of John and Aletta Lehmann and sister of Nancy Boyle, Ruth grew up in Everett, Wash. She attended Whitman as a biology major and member of TriDelta. In 1947, she married Sid Craford of Onawa, Iowa, her husband of 48 years. They settled in Vancouver where they raised daughters, Katie, Jane, Mary and Margaret. Ruth served as a Camp Fire Girls leader, helped establish the Young Audiences program in Clark County, held leadership positions with PEO and the Oregon Symphony Auxiliary, volunteered at the Grant House and FISH and was a longtime member of the 1st Congregational Church. Despite her quiet nature, Ruth took a genuine interest in others and, through AFS and Friendship Force, was a mentor or host to many from around the world. She had a passion for nature and continued to hike the Columbia Gorge trails into her 80s. She was also an avid history buff and a talented amateur flutist and poet who availed herself of all that the Pacific Northwest's museums, theaters and concert halls had to offer. Having enjoyed a vibrant 85 years, Ruth died surrounded by what she'd treasured most in life - loved ones, music, prayer. Though challenged with dementia in her final years, Ruth's appreciation of these and other things she found meaningful never wavered. Her courageous, gracious spirit was an inspiration. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law; grandchildren; great-grandson; and large extended family.
