In 1900 he and his parents and three siblings lived on a farm they owned, with a mortgage, in Washington Township, Story County, IA.

In 1910 he was a lodger in the home of Florence Broughton in a house she was renting in Ward 8 in Omaha, NE. She worked as a seamstress, making dresses, and he worked as a clerk in a hardware store. Also living there was he 15-year-old nephew, Hunter Parker.

In 1920 he and his first wife Della, age 29, lived in a house they were renting at 2448 Encinal Avenue in Alameda, CA. He worked as a clerk in a hardware store.

In 1930 he and his second wife Mary, age 33, lived in a place they were renting at 925 Sixteenth Street in Sacramento, CA. They did not have a radio. He worked as a merchant, running a hardware store.
