Indiana Governor. After he graduating from Indiana University in 1932, he went to work at his father's furniture store and later became a representative, working for the Unagusta Furniture Corporation, in North Carolina. Returning to Indiana, he was a member to the Indiana State Senate, (1940-42). During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 85th Division, U.S. Army, training troops in the Mojave Desert. After his military service, he again served in the Indiana State Senate, (1948-52) and was the 39th Lieutenant Governor of Indiana, (1953-57). In 1957, he was elected as a Republican the 40th Governor of Indiana, serving until 1961. During his tenure, a veterinary school was founded at Purdue University, grants were secured for the land at the Lake Michigan port location and construction was launched on a new thirteen-floor state office building. After leaving office, he established a successful public relations business. He died of a heart attack at age 62 while on a vacation to Wyoming.
