Jasper T. Hand was the eldest known child of Jasper E. Hand and Amanda Jane (Pritchard) Hand, born in 1862 in Alabama. In the 1870 Federal Census, Jasper was living in District 15, Hickman, Tennessee, United States, with his parents and sister.

At the age of 16, Jasper was living in Oregon County, Missouri with his parents and sisters on the family's 160 acre farm. He was murdered on the 18th of July 1878 by a neighbor's son, George W Steel Jr, as Jasper T was hoeing between the rows of cotton in his father's field. Jasper's father, Jasper E Hand, saw his only son and namesake, struck in the head over his right ear with a five pound hoe by George W Steel Jr. Jasper T Hand lingered suffering for a few hours then died near midnight. The morning of the murder, George W Steel Sr had come onto the Hand property with a rifle and put his fist up to Jasper T Hand's face, threatening to whip him. Jasper E Hand had stepped between his son and George Sr to calm him down. Various witnesses stated that Jasper T Hand was a quiet, peaceable boy and did not know what the trouble was between him and the Steels.
