According to his obituary in the Harrisburg Daily Independent, he was the youngest son of Dr. William & Mary (Wolfersberger) Henderson, but the only John Henderson of his age found in the censuses was the son of James & Sarah Henderson. James was William & Mary's son, which may mean that John the grandson of William & Mary. Suffice it to say that John's parentage remains unclear.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, July 31, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. C, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg July 15, 1864, mustered into federal service there July 18 as a private with Co. D, 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 6, 1864.
3. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 17, 1865, as a private with Co. C in the one-year organization of the 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865, at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

He married Sarah Jane Fox and fathered Minnie G. (b. 02/14/69 - married Charles Warren Stecher), Sarah Ann "Sallie" (b. 11/27/71), Mary C. (b. 06/02/75 - married Joseph Keeseman Grass), and Luther Bruce (b. 01/26/85). A member of Harrisburg's Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R., he was also a long time member of the Hummelstown Silver Cornet Band. Cause of his death reportedly was consumption.
