Leon A. Cowell EAST OTIS Leon Austin Cowell, 87, formerly of East Otis, died as the result of a motor vehicle accident May 18, in Lake Wales, Fla. He was the youngest of 10 children born to Robert and Mary Dearing Cowell. Leon attended schools in Otis and Lee, where he played several sports. His Fern Cliff yearbook mentioned that he found joy in everything, and his quote was "Happy and I; from care I'm free". He worked on the family farm and at many other endeavors - contractor, bus driver and owner of the Firehouse Diner, to name just a few. He served in WWII, Military Police in Germany, and the European theatre. He was a member and officer of the Otis Kiwanis. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, RVing and Hogan's Heroes. Leon was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Betty Clow, who died in 2000. Leon and Betty enjoyed years of traveling and visited the entire U.S. and abroad. He leaves his daughter, Roberta and her husband, Clifford "Skip", Skowron of Stockbridge; Jo Anne and her husband, Edward, Iacobacci of Babson Park, Fla.; granddaughter, Samantha and husband, Kevin Hensley; grandson, Ty, of Frostproof, Fla.; beloved sister, Dorothy Carrington of East Otis; and numerous nieces and nephews that he thoroughly enjoyed visiting. He also leaves behind his beloved canine companion, "Trouble". He was predeceased by three daughters, Janis June, Peggy Jean and a baby girl; sisters, Elwine McManus, Eva Chapin and Bernice Thomas, and brothers, Clarence, Everett, Rueben, Stanley and Raymond. MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be performed in the fall at a time and date to be announced. Those wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to their local animal shelter.
