Henry Bernard served as a Private in Co. D, 58th Regiment Illinois Infantry. He enlisted on February 10, 1862 at Serena, Illinois for a period of 3 years. He was mustered in at Chicago, Illinois. He was taken prisoner on or about April 6, 1862 during the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, also known as the Battle of Shiloh, in Pittsburg Landing, Hardin County, Tennessee. By August 15, 1862, he was at Benton Barracks, near St. Louis, Missouri. On April 10, 1863, he was on detached service as a prisoner guard to Virginia. On May 18, 1864, he was wounded at the battle of Yellow Bayou, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. He spent the rest of the war in the hospital, primarily at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri. He was discharged on January 21, 1865 with 1/2 disability due to gunshot wound in left leg resulting in lameness.
