On May 18, 1864, he was wounded at the battle of Yellow Bayou, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. He spent the rest of the war in the hospital, primarily at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri. He was discharged on January 21, 1865 with 1/2 disability due to gunshot wound in left leg resulting in lameness.
