He drowned June 19, 1778 in Fishkill Creek, under water only a short time. Much pain was taken to save him, but in vain.

June 19. This morning James Sage, a nine months soldier from Rehoboth, Massachusettes Bay, under Col. Lee, was drowned at Fish-kill Creek, as he was swimming. He was but a short time under water, which excited hopes that he might be recovered, much pain was taken---but in vain.
