Born Johann R. Buss. He came from Hanover, Prussia, Germany. Hanover is a state of Germany not to be confused with the city of Hanover. Hanover belonged to the Prussian Empire at that time. However the area that the Buss family and all their ancesters came from is Ostfriesland.
He married Fenke Brass in 1863 and they raised 10 children; Dirk, Joseph, Reint, Tipka, Aalke, Reina, Grietje, John, Henry John and Fannie.
It is said that they had 5 farms in the area and were very well off. Some of their children stayed Illinois and others moved West to South Dakota. John passed away at the age of 54. He came to make a better life in America.
