Born in Cornwall, he emigrated to the Cape Colony and worked as a platelayer on the Cape Government Railways, and was eventually promoted to permanent way inspector. He also farmed at Bethulie in the Free State, but retired to Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. He was killed in an accident when the card he was driving overturned near the Bongolo Dam.
