Indiana Governor, U.S. Congressman. Moving to Knox County, Indiana, he established a successful career in farming. He served as president the State Board of Agriculture for 16 years and was justice of the peace of Vincennes, Indiana (1839-42). He also served as a member to the Indiana House of Representatives (1843, 47, 51, 56, 68) and a member to the Indiana State Senate (1858, 62, 70). He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1872 and elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving 1875-76. In 1877, he was elected the 17th Governor of Indiana, serving until death from a kidney infection. He was the only farmer ever to be elected as the Governor of Indiana.
