David E. Barnes, 65, of 1120 Ridge Road, Lansing, died Saturday, Sept. 17 at Tompkins Community Hospital, Ithaca.

Mr. Barnes was born April 7, 1929 in Ithaca, the son of the late Delford and Estella DuBois Barnes, and had been a life-long resident of the Tompkins and southern Cayuga County area.

He was employed by Cargill Salt Inc. of Lansing for 33 years, retiring several years ago. Since then, he had been a driver for Reeves Brothers Trucking of Lansing until his illness. He was a life member for the Lansingville Co. #3 of the Lansing Fire Dept. and of the American Motorcyle Association. Mr. Barnes was a past member of the Schuyler County Motorcycle Club, and had been nationally ranked in Enduro racing in the 1960s. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed fishing and bow hunting and had been recognized in Pope and Young Record Book for a record-size deer he had taken in 1991.

Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife of 25 years, Patricia Moyer Barnes; two sons, Larry E. Barnes and his wife Becky of King Ferry and Gary E. Barnes and his wife Karen of Genoa; two daughters, Carol M. Merical and her husband Bruce of Kingsland, Georgia and Jodie A. Chiszar and her husband Jeff of Lansing; a brother Richard D. Barnes of Fairborn, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Bohmer of Lansing and Pearl (Dottie) Swansbrough of Groton; his former wife Mary Knox Barnes of King Ferry; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Daniel Barnes, in 1985.

At Mr. Barnes' request, there will be no calling hours or services. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by the Shurtleff Funeral Home, Genoa.
