By 1920, at the age of 15, Mary was working at one of the local cigar factories as were most of the youngsters aged 14 or more, her job being a roller. It was during this period of time (after leaving school and before her marriage) that she and her sister Hazel would make annual summer trips to Atlantic City for vacation. The stories they told of the trips, and also the surviving post cards back to their parents, were full of the language of fun. It has always amazed me that they were allowed to make the trip on their own at such a young age, but it was a different time and an age of innocence.
On June 7, 1924 Mary married her school mate and neighbor Carl Gable, the son of Jacob Clayton Gable and Idella Seitz and moved to the Gable Farm (Deer Springs Farm) just east of Felton on the Felton Road. Their first child, Audrey, arrived in 1925 and by 1942 they had a full family of three daughters and one son.
Mary, upon marriage, took up the life of a farmer's wife, milking cows, feeding the farm hands, and taking care of the children. She made the best fried chicken I have ever tasted and made a dessert dish called "Heavenly Rice" that was just that, heavenly tasting. Her daughters, even after having helped her make these dishes and having the recipes, have not been able to duplicate the taste.
Mary was a founding member of the Windsor Assembly of God church, where she was a Sunday School teacher, director of Women's Ministry and a member of the church choir. She also was a member of the Felton Fire Company Auxiliary.
Mary died on August 31, 1988 at the age of 83 years and Carl died on November 20, 1991 at the age of 90 years. Both are buried in the Trinity Cemetery in Felton, Pennsylvania.
