When John was still in grade school his family moved from Habersham County, GA to Gastonia, North Carolina. In addition to his service in the military, John worked in the local cotton mill, was a driver for a grocery company, and was a car salesman. According to his draft card, which he filled out in October 1940, John was 5'7" tall and weighed 171 pounds. His eyes were blue and his hair was blonde. John and his wife Nell had no children. John's death was due to an ulcer that hemorrhaged. He also had COPD.
