William (Bill) Bowman was a son of Mary Bowman, daughter of Daniel Bowman and Elizabeth Skiles.

William Bowman served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a Private in Company D, 6th Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He enlisted on August 12, 1864, at Pikeville, Tennessee, and was mustered into service at Chattanooga, Tennessee, on that same date, August 12, 1864. At that time, his birthplace was noted as Bledsoe County, Tennessee and his age was 38 years old. He was noted as having blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and height: six (6) feet, one (1) inch.
