Learning to read with Grandma. Cute little William Channing Appleton, Jr., son of Edna Marion Turner (Mrs. Appleton) and William Channing Appleton with his grandma Martha Linda Ellis (Mrs. Edwin Morgan Turner). Written on the back of the photo was the date September 26, 1898. Location was probably Cohassett.
Scanned and digitally restored from the original photo in my collection of family memorabilia.

Martha Linda Ellis (Mrs. Edwin Morgan Turner) holds her daughter Edna Marion Turner's horse steady for the camera. Edna is wearing a skirt and riding sidesaddle which was considered the proper ladylike way for a woman to ride a horse back then. Scanned, digitally restored, and recolored in sepia from the original cyanotype in my collection of family memorabilia. Photo is very grainy, but is still an interesting glimpse of the Turner family's life back in the late 1800s when I believe they lived in Cohasset, Massachusetts. Photo taken about 1890.
