Elias Nickols.

Elias Nickols passed away at 8:30 Wednesday morning, May [sic] 14, 1913, at the home maintained by himself and daughter Mrs. William Hayes, in this city. His death followed months of suffering from a dropsical ailment. He was 64 years, 5 months and 23 days old.

He was a son of E. H. and Diana Nickols and was born in Athens county, Ohio, November 21, 1848. In 1854, with his parents, he moved to Hancock county, Illinois. They landed at Warsaw on the 17th of April and located on a farm near Pontoosuc, where Elias grew to manhood.

In 1865 he married Miss Sarah Sherman and to them were born six children, four girls and two boys. Three died in infancy and one later in life. The survivors are Mrs. William Kirby and Mrs. Hayes, both living in LaHarpe.

On the 28th of October, 1875, Mrs. Nickols died and was laid to rest near Pontoosuc. The husband continued to reside on the farm until 1893, then moved to LaHarpe where the remainder of his life was spent.

His fatal illness had its inception about two years ago and he never afterwards made any preceptible [sic] gain in health but gradually declined until the end. He was eonsciaus [sic] to the last. Members of the family did everything in their power to ease his suffering which at times was intense.

Besides the two daughters, fifteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren, four brothers and four sisters survive him as follows: Alfred and Stimpson Nickols, of Aledo; Ben, of Mendon; Oscar of LaHarpe; Mrs. Libbie Starkey and Mrs. Ida Ash, of Pontoosuc, Mrs. Jennie Cooper and Mrs. John Terry, of Aledo.

The funeral was held at the home Friday conducted by Rev. C. I. Hoy.
