Betty Jeane Hanson was born in rural Maxbass, Bottineau County, ND to George and Dorothy (Leathers) Hanson on June 19, 1924. She attended Mount Rose Township Consolidated School and graduated from Lansford High School in 1940. She received her teaching certificate from Minot State College and taught in the Minot area for 2 years.

During WWII she was employed as a civil service clerk in Spokane, WA. Later she returned to the family farm in Mount Rose Township, Bottineau County, rural Lansford to assist her parents on their poultry and dairy farm. She moved to Mohall in 1992, but maintained her Lansford area farming interests.

Betty played a variety of musical instruments, including piano, guitar and violin and was lead singer with her 2 sisters in the Hanson Sisters musical group. They performed in KLPM radio station in Minot and on the National Farm and Home Hour program, with state and national coverage in the 1930's and 1940's. They sang for the USO in Washington and Idaho. The sisters were involved in many community musical events for about 60 years. Betty was also a former member of the Renville Township Homemakers Club.
