Eknes, Einar E. 1913-2004
Einar Eknes, 90, of Orange City, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Burlington (Wis.) Memorial Hospital.
Memorial services will be 10:30 am. Friday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City with Dr. Kent Eknes officiating. Interment will be prior to the service at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Einar Eric Eknes was born Oct. 6, 1913, in Norway, the son of Ole and Sophia (Erikson) Eknes. When he was 3 years old, he came to America with his family. They settled at Cloquet, Minn., where he was raised.
In 1938, he joined the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres during World War II. He also served in the Korean Conflict. On Sept. 9, 1942.
He married Dorothy Fern Goodknight at Chickasha, Okla.
They lived in many places including France, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Mississippi, California, Delaware, New York, South Carolina and many more. In 1963, they moved to Orange City, where he was employed at Hi-Precision.
Dorothy died Nov. 30. 1996, in Orange City.
In later years, he made his home near a daughter in Burlington.
He was a 50-year member of the American Legion, the Sons of Norway and the Retired Oificers Association. He en joyed golfing and bowling, and loved to read and take long walks.
Survivors include his four children, Katherine Moree "Kay" and her husband. James De Jong, of Orange City, Kent Eric Eknes and his wife, Judy, of Rock Valley, Iowa, Karla Jo Aalberts of Los Angeles, and Kim Krista and her husband, David Kerkhoff. of Burlington: eight grandchildren:seven great-grandchildren: five brothers, Oscar, David, Johnny, Richard and William Eknes; and three sisters, Anne Skarmon, Signe Mote and Beverly Lindevig.
He was preceded in death by his wife two brothers Carl and Olaf and a sister, Eleanor.
Memorials may he directed to the Hope Haven Wheelchair Ministries in Rock Valley or Sioux County Hospice.
