John was born in the Springhill area of Augusta Co, VA near Staunton to Samuel Lytton and Sarah Graham. He was a Cooper in his younger day, learning the trade from his father.

He married Rebecca Ann Curry in Dec 1858. Then in 1861, he enlisted and fought for the South and was part of the infamous Immortal 600 Confederate soldiers imprisoned for almost one year from May 1864 until they took the oath of allegiance on May 8, 1865.

He moved his family to Gage County Nebraska in the mid to late 1870s and then to Stillwater, Payne County Oklahoma, where he lived his last years. He was buried beside his wife and two of his children, Charles and Metta. Son Dale is buried nearby.
