He enjoyed photography, renovating his homes, and he built, planted, and maintained the "Rock Hall Water Garden." He also devoted a large part of his life to caring for his mother.
Mr. Schauer attended Rock Hall United Methodist Church, where his father was once minister.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Glenn.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Irene Lyons-Schauer, whom he married on March 19, 2001; a sister, Linda Kowalski of New Hampshire; three nephews; and a niece.
