Bernice Edwin Wood was the second of six children born to Rolan Edwin and Bessie Lee Parham Wood in Gibson County, Tennessee. He grew up in the Milan area as a child attending county schools, but he graduated from Milan High School in 1939. After high school graduation, he moved to Washington, D. C. where he started working for Peoples Drug Stores. There in D. C., Bernice met and married the former Elaine Cecile Hayes in 1941. He was called to military service in the U. S. Army in 1942 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Bernice was honorably discharged in 1945 from the U. S. Army and returned to Peoples Drug Stores to continue working. After many years with this company, he retired in 1977. He and Elaine decided in 1979 to leave their long time home in Greenbelt, Maryland and return to his childhood home in Milan, Tennessee. They lived in his parents home for a couple of years finally buying a home on Barham Street in Milan.

Bernice was a very giving, friendly, social and active man who gave in many ways to any cause that he held in high regard. He remained active even though he had residual effects from injuries sustained during a robbery attempt at one of his Peoples Drug Stores earlier in his working career. He was the type that would give you the shirt off of his back to help you. He always wanted to see the rooms of his nieces and nephews when he came to visit in order to drop coins into their piggy banks. Bernice was most proud of his country, and his patriotic spirit was demonstrated in the flying of the U. S. flag every day at his home always practicing the proper respect and protocol of the flag.

Mr. Wood was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Milan, Tennessee where he served as a Deacon and was a member of the Men's Fellowship Club and the Friendly Couples Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Milan Chapter of the Eastern Star #261 where he served as a Past Patron. He was a member of the Tennessee Lodge of Research, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Milan Masonic Lodge #191, a member of the Scottish Rite, a Shriner and a member of the Al Chymia Temple in Memphis, TN. He also retained membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4780 in Milan, the Milan Chapter of the AARP where he served as Past President and was a member of the former Milan Exchange Club. In Greenbelt, Maryland, he retained memberships in the American Legion Post #136 and the Disabled American Veterans Post #23.

Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents, Rolan Edwin and Bessie Lee Parham Wood and his first child that only lived a few hours, Elizabeth Ann Wood.

Many nieces and nephews mourned his loss as well as friends and neighbors in Milan and Maryland.

Since Bernice passed away, his wife, Elaine, daughter, Mary, grandson, James (Jed), brothers, Robert and Bennie, sisters, Ann and Hettie and other family members have joined him. If there is a flag pole in heaven, Bernice will be standing next to it! If there is a club that does good works, he will be in it. He will no doubt be enjoying his family and friends who meant so much to him. And if there are any chores to be done, he'll be doing them.
