Amy was the daughter of Thomas James & Eliza Agnes (Margetts) Stanley and was born near Oxford, England. In 1912 she decided to come to America to work as a children's maid in New Haven, Connecticut. She boarded the Titanic as a 3rd class passenger at Southampton, England. When the Titanic hit an iceberg, Amy climbed into collapsible lifeboat C and was picked up by the Carpathia. Arriving safely in New York, she wrote her parents to let them know she had survived, collected $200 from the Red Cross and went to New Haven to start her job. In 1918, she married WWI naval veteran Eugene Sheldon Tanner and they had two sons, Alfred and Eugene Jr. The family lived in Providence, Rhode Island. She was survived by her husband, sons and three grandchildren.
